Acid soils are not perhaps the most abundant of the planet although in some geographic areas are more common than in others. So for example the British isles are known for their acidic soils due to its geology and its climate. There are many plants that can grow in acid soils but plants that grow only in acid soils there are not so many. We have found, so input, these five which are listed below.
The andromeda, or pieris, Pieris japonica, is a shrub native of Japan, whose leaves are toxic to animals. It has a strange flowering of small pink flowers arracimadas. Needs part shade and acid soil. There is that control good irrigation and fertilization. Acid soils, present an electrical load is predominantly negative, which facilitates the fixation of the cations, positive such as potassium, magnesium and calcium.
The rhododendron is an evergreen shrub native to western China. There are rhododendrons of very different heights, from 50 cm up to 3 meters. You only need about 5 hours of light a day and never in direct sun. Does not tolerate neither the cold nor the extreme heat, although the cool temperatures are the best you are going. The soil should be moist but well-drained soil. The acidity of the soil can be linked to the amount of humus that constitutes, or to the presence of clay. The rhododendron in particular does not tolerate clay soils, in spite of this.
The heather, Calluna Vulgaris, is a shrub that does not exceed the meter of height. Grows best in partial shade and it is a plant very used in rocky outcrops. There is a great variety of heathers but all agree on the necessity of an acid soil and with good drainage. The addition of a large amount of organic matter increases the acidity of the soil. Although when the pH of a soil is greater than 8 it is difficult to render it acid.
Blueberries, Vaccinum myrtillus, for example, need a pH of 4.5-5.5, which is a very low pH. Will not grow well if planted in soil that is alkaline. Compost or pine needles are good additions to acidify a soil with a neutral or not too alkaline. It can also be used a corrector of pH composite from sulfur and bentonite (a type of clay).
The chaquihue, Crinodendron hookerianum, is a shrub endemic of Chile. It can reach up to 8 meters in height and blooms in summer. It grows near water courses and damp places and semisombríos. Its flowering is really original and its red flowers or roses are hermaphrodites. Produces a fleshy fruit that has a capsule with round seeds and white.
